Spring 2007 was a great year for GORC Baseball. GORC fielded a total of 39 teams (0ver 450 players) in all age divisions. Our “opening day” was a great success with the parade, various fun activities and exciting baseball games at the GORC fields!
GORC teams participated in numerous tournaments spanning 4 age groups from 14 years of age down to Coach Pitch. Congratulations to our County and MABA teams who won their league titles! All age groups showed marked improvement in level of play.
Our Intramural and Coach Pitch leagues are growing and the players are showing great promise for the future. We expect 2008 to be even more exciting as we continue to increase the opportunities for our GORC baseball players.
In addition to the A.A. Rec. & Parks league, some individual county teams will also play in the Mid Atlantic Baseball Association League. In an effort to give our players an opportunity to play more games against a fairly high level of competition, we fielded five MABA teams in 2007. The teams were very successful. We will field an 8U full-time MABA team and a 12U CBA team in 2008. Please check back to the web site often, as tryouts for some of these teams will begin in early February. Teams are forming now and the coach's contact information is posted at the top of the baseball page.
Age
Eligibility:
Any child born between the dates of 5/1/1993 and 12/31/2003 are eligible. Please note that for Baseball purposes, the age of the child is considered to be the age he/she will be on April 30, 2008. Historically we have used a July 31st date. Children with birthdates between these dates (May 1st to August 1st) may now have an option to play in either of two different age groups. We encourage those players in this category to play at the higher level whenever possible.
Game
and Practice Schedule:
All practices and games will be held at the GORC fields (Excluding Tee Ball). Tee Ball games and practices will be held at Piney Orchard Elementary. There will be two or more practices per week before the season begins (weekdays and weekends). Once the season begins, there will generally be two games per week (weekend games are on Saturday) and one or more practices depending on level of play and field availability. MABA teams will also play on Sunday afternoon. County games are scheduled by the A.A. County Recreation & Parks. Practices will begin after evaluations are complete and teams are formed.
Equipment
and Uniforms:
GORC will supply each child with tee shirt, hat and baseball pants that will be theirs to keep. The local GORC league uniforms will be an MLB replica style and the County uniforms will be the GORC Wildcats style. Each child will need a glove and cleats (recommended) or sneakers. All other team equipment will be supplied by GORC.
Coaches Needed – Intramurals 10U, coach pitch and tee ball.

County Baseball General Information. County baseball is competitive play for boys ages 9 through 14. Teams participate in the A.A. County YBA, the CBA, or the Mid Atlantic Baseball Association and additional tournaments. Registered 11 to 14-year-old players will be placed on a County team regardless of their evaluations. Competitive tryouts are used to form teams composed of players with similar abilities. An effort will be made to field competitive teams by properly matching team ability with opposition level. This will enable all children to individually excel and more fully enjoy the sport.
13-14 County. Players will compete on a County team which travels around the Anne Arundel County region. There will be two teams at this level. Both teams will play an A.A. County schedule and one will also play in the MABA. Additionally, these teams may play in one or more tournaments during the season. Competitive tryouts will be held to determine particular team placement. Players should check the website frequently for tryout updates.
11-12 County. Players will compete on a County team which travels around the Anne Arundel County region. There will likely be four teams in this age group. Various levels of competition will exist and players will be placed according to their skill level. Also, an effort will be made to keep like ages together whenever possible in order to establish greater team continuity over multiple seasons. Teams may play in one or more tournaments during the season. Players should check the website frequently for evaluation information.
9-10 County. There will be three teams representing GORC at this age level. Each team will play a “County travel schedule” and may participate in one or more tournaments. A competitive evaluation will be held for those 9-10 year old players who wish to tryout for one of these teams. When forming these three teams, an effort will be made to keep like ages together whenever possible in order to establish greater team continuity over multiple seasons. Players should check the website for further instruction regarding tryouts.
9-10 Intramurals. This is our “in-house” baseball league. Baseball instruction and play is geared for boys ages 9 to 10. All 9-10 year old players not on our County team will play in our in-house intramural league. Teams in the league compete against one another at the GORC fields. An end of year two-day tournament will be held to determine the league champion. Additionally, an “All Star” tournament has been scheduled in previous years. An evaluation will be held for those players who do not tryout for a County team. Players should attend either of the two evaluation dates scheduled. Please see the website for tryout dates. A player draft will be held by the intramural coaches to determine team placement. Players who tryout for a County team but do not make it do not need to attend the intramural evaluation and will automatically be included in the intramural draft.
8
Travel. This 8 year old team
will play a 19 game competitive travel schedule across several counties. The
game schedule begins around the first weekend in April. Please
contact the coach for more information and evaluation dates are posted on the
GORC web site.
7-8 Coach Pitch. Coach Pitch Baseball is intended to introduce 7 and 8-year-old boys to the sport of Baseball. This secondary level of instruction is geared towards enhancing the basic fundamental skills of fielding, hitting and sportsmanship. This league is appropriate for boys who have had one or two years of Tee Ball as well as those entirely new to the sport. In an effort to develop hitting and fielding technique and speed game play, coaches will pitch to their own players throughout the course of the games. All teams play one another in this local GORC league. An evaluation is held to help place the players on fair/equal teams. Please see the GORC website for tryout information. Players should attend either of the two evaluation dates scheduled. We have fielded an “All Star” tournament team the last three years. You should be contacted by your coach by the first week of April with practice times and locations. New in 2007 - GORC will field a competitive team in the MABA at the 8-year-old level. Games will be on Sunday in addition to the regular schedule. Contact the Commissioner if interested.
5-6 Tee Ball. Tee Ball is a co-ed, clinic level sport geared towards introducing 5-6 year old boys and girls to the sports of baseball and softball. The instruction is based on the fundamentals of the two sports, introducing the children to the field of play, positions, simple plays and the mechanics of fielding and hitting. There are no evaluations. Players are placed on individual teams at random. You should be contacted by your coach by the first week of April with practice times and locations. The games begin mid April and are usually twice a week. One week night and Saturday - sometime between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. Tee ball fields are at Piney Orchard Elementary but we try to move the games to GORC when possible. The season generally runs through the first week of June but allow for makeups due to rain and the scheduling of team parties. Last Year GORC fielded 14 teams so coaches are needed at this level - email the commissioner if you are willing to coach.
